Minister to Be Questioned Over HIV Outbreak

Health Minister Mam Bunheng has been summoned for questioning next week by the National Assembly’s health commission over the outbreak of HIV among villagers in Battambang province’s Roka commune, the commission’s secretary-general said Friday.

CNRP lawmaker Pot Peou said Mr. Bunheng had been asked to appear before the commission on Tuesday to discuss the health crisis in the commune in Sangke district.

Ms. Peou said she had received a report from the Health Ministry on Thursday stating that between December 8 and December 31, a total of 212 people had been recorded as being infected with HIV, including 39 children aged under 14.

Soeum Chhom, 63, deputy Roka commune chief, said that he was aware of 239 cases of people testing positive for HIV at the local health center up until the end of last week. Mr. Bunheng could not be reached on Friday.
