Minister Reassures Vietnamese Official Over Border

Defense Minister Tea Banh reassured Vietnam’s deputy defense minister Monday that the Cambodian government had “controlled” the situation along the countries’ shared border.

“Previously there were some issues along the border and we needed to provide clear information to our friend that we have controlled the people and the situation,” General Banh told reporters following his 40-minute private conversation with the Vietnamese Deputy National Defense Minister, Nguyen Chi Vinh, at the Defense Ministry in Phnom Penh.

He did not elaborate on what specific border issues had been resolved, but added, “We all agreed to solve problems together and share information with each other.”

Gen. Banh said that despite the recent upheaval over the border due to the opposition CNRP’s claims that Vietnam had made incursions into Cambodian territory, Vietnam had continued to provide military aid to its neighbor.

“There is a lot of support from our friend Vietnam, especially providing training to Cambodian soldiers…and help building barracks and some other buildings.”
