Military Policeman Suspended in Battery Case

Chhor Dara, the military police deputy commander of Kandal province, was officially suspended Monday, opening the way for court investigators to continue their probe into allegations that he broke a waitress’ leg.

The decision, signed by the co-ministers of defense, said Chhor Dara cannot resume command until there is a court decision. A suspension ceremony was held Monday; Chhor Dara was not present.

Lieutenant Ly Ny, personnel chief for the national military police, read the announcement, which stated that Chhor Dara made a serious mistake and abused his authority.

He is accused of beating a waitress last month in Phnom Penh’s Prek Liep commune, Russei Keo district. She suffered a broken leg.

According to Ly Ny, Chhor Dara received two court summons but did not respond.

Ly Ny declined to comment on what the court would do if Chhor Dara ignored other summons. He said the court has the right to investigate the case, and if Chhor Dara is acquitted, he can return to his job.

In a telephone interview, Chhor Dara said he was not aware of the suspension. He said he would not appear before the court, because the incident was a now-resolved family problem.                                    Military police officials said no decision has been made on a replacement for Chhor Dara.

“This is a message of warning to other military police and soldiers to understand that they could lose their job for doing wrong like this,” Ly Ny said.
