Migrant Worker Arrested Over Murder in Bangkok

Police arrested a migrant worker on Saturday in Battambang province for attempting to rape and then murdering a Thai woman in Bangkok last week.

Provincial police were informed of the murder by Thai police and tracked down Rith Saroth, 24, two days after he returned home to Thma Koul district’s Anlong Run commune, said provincial police chief Chet Vanny.

“We arrested the suspect after cooperating with border police and Thai police to find the suspect at his parents’ house in Thma Koul district,” he said, adding that Mr. Saroth had confessed to the murder, which occurred on October 21.

Mr. Vanny said the suspect attacked the woman while she was alone in her room at their workplace, where they peeled coconuts, but she fought back so he began choking her then grabbed a knife and slit her throat.

Battambang provincial police chief Sar Thet said the suspect had been sent to the provincial court to be charged, but did not know whether he would be returned to Thailand to face charges there.
