The trial of an unlicensed medic who was charged with murder after allegedly infecting more than 270 people with HIV will begin on Tuesday, a court official said on Friday.
Yem Chrin was arrested last year on accusation of reusing syringes for injections, leading to a mass outbreak in Battambang province’s Roka commune.
Nuon San, a prosecutor at the provincial court, said that the trial of Yem Chrin would last five days, and that more than 100 victims had filed complaints with the court against the medic.
Em Sovann, Mr. Chrin’s lawyer, confirmed his client would appear at court on Tuesday, but declined to comment further.
The outbreak in the rural commune has now taken the lives of 10 people, according to By Beng Sor, chief of the Roka Health Center.
“No additional people have contracted the HIV virus recently, and people have been coming to get their health checked every day,” he added.
The most recent person infected with the virus to die was 79-year-old Chheng Oeun, who died last month of tuberculosis, commune chief Sim Pov said.
