Manager, Two Bodyguards Shot Outside Club

The Singaporean manager of the Manhattan Club and his two bodyguards were shot early Sunday morning as they left work in the latest instance of violence  near the late-night disco.

Police said the three men were shot at 5 am as they exited the lobby of the Holiday International Hotel, which connected to the Manhattan Club by a walkway.

William Tay, 48, was shot in the left shoulder. One of his bodyguards, Bou Sarith, 28, was shot three times and sent to Calmette Hospital were he is still in serious condition, police said.

Another bodyguard, Heng Samadi, 35, was shot in the lower leg.

The two gunmen fled quickly on motorcycle after the attack, Sras Chak Commune Chief Chhay Thirith said.

The gunmen had arrived about 1 am, Chhay Thirith said. One of them waited inside the lobby while the other man stayed outside in the parking lot, ready with the motorcycle.

Police did not know the names of the two shooters. Municipal Penal Police Chief Khuon Sophoan said police are investigating the possibility the two men were hired as hitmen because of a personal or business dispute.

The Manhattan Club frequently stays open until the early morning hours, and has been the scene of numerous violent incidents in the past year.

In December, several Cambodian men, allegedly including Prime Minister Hun Sen’s nephew Nhim Pov, set upon three Japanese tourists with broken bottles outside the club, wounding two of the tourists seriously.

Most recently, municipal police threatened to close the club in September, after a Singaporean businessman was fatally shot in the club and a Malaysian man was slashed with a knife.

Khem Sophal, marketing officer for the Holiday Hotel, said the hotel’s management is considering closing the walkway at night to keep clubgoers out of the hotel.

“This problem has come from Manhattan’s, not from Holiday,” he said.
