Man Stands Trial for Posting Nude Photos of Girlfriend

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday heard the case of a young man charged with extortion and distribution of pornography after he allegedly posted naked photos of his girlfriend on Facebook.

Eng Samphors, 24, a second-year university student, was arrested near the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital in March, according to Heang Hong, the lawyer of the 21-year-old victim.

The victim is requesting $10,000 in compensation.

Monday’s hearing was held behind closed doors, but Mr. Hong said Mr. Samphors posted the images of his client via a Facebook account named “WHY LOVE” on March 25.

“They were a couple and they slept together, and the suspect called her to his home to apologize to his family,” Mr. Hong said, adding that he did not know what Mr. Samphors had wanted his client to apologize for.

“The victim did not go, and then the suspect posted her photos on Facebook and extort money from her.”

Mr. Hong said that Mr. Samphors confessed in court to posting the nude photos, but denied the extortion charge.

“He said he definitely did post the photos, because he wanted his girlfriend to meet him but she did not, but [he said] he did not extort her.” A verdict is due November 20.
