The fourth gun attack on Phnom Penh streets in eight days sent beer garden singer Chanda Ravy to early morning surgery on Tuesday.
Chanda Ravy, 23, was gunned down by a gang of young men at about 12:45 am as she was going home from her singing job at the Happy Night Club beer garden in the former T3 prison compound in Daun Penh district’s Phsar Chas commune, said Huy Song, a district deputy penal police chief.
Municipal Penal Police Chief Reach Sokhon said the police suspect that one of the culprits was a former boyfriend seeking revenge after being denied Chanda Ravy’s sexual favors.
“I hope to arrest him soon. We just got information from three witnesses. The shooting happened at 12:45 am early [Tuesday] on Alley 15 in the Phsar Chas block,” Reach Sokhon said.
“Even our local policemen did not know the shooting occurred last night because it was too late,” he added.
According to the police report, the singer was shot three times—once in the stomach, once in the groin and once in the leg.
Cyclo drivers who witnessed the incident told police that the young men were asking Chanda Ravy for sex, and when she refused to go with them, one man pulled out a K-59 handgun and shot her.
The gang fled the scene on motorbikes, the report said.
One of Chanda Ravy’s doctors said Tuesday that the singer will survive her injuries.
Huy Song added that police do not suspect the culprits of being associated with the group of sons of Phnom Penh’s elite that has been accused of terrorizing citizens on Oct 27 in a drunken collision and shooting that killed three and injured four.
One police official said Monday that members of the same group are suspected of involvement in a Sunday night car chase and shooting that ran the son and daughter of an RCAF general off the road.
