Man Seriously Beaten After Trying to Steal Motorcycle

A 23-year-old man was seriously injured late on Wednesday night when he was beaten by a large crowd in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey district after attempting to steal a motorcycle, police said.

Ven Vandy and another man followed three women who were riding a motorcycle home from at NagaWorld Hotel and Casino, where they work, around 11:45 p.m.

The two men pulled in front of the women and fired a gun twice into the air, demanding the women’s motorcycle, said Chak Angre Krom commune police chief Lour Linno.

Mr. Linno said when the women refused to give up the motorcycle, people nearby moved in on Mr. Vandy and his accomplice, but the accomplice managed to escape.

“Mr. Vandy was beaten and he was seriously injured. He is now in police custody,” he said.

“Police found a handgun on the ground near the suspect.”

Mr. Linno said one of the women, Chan Dany, 20, filed a complaint with police. Mr. Linno said Ms. Dany told police, “They are robbers and the crowd saw them try to rob me of my motorbike and they beat one of them.”
