Man Kills Mother in Drunken Rage

A 27-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in Siem Reap province for allegedly beating his mother to death after she berated him for arriving home drunk, police said Sunday.

The suspect, Hoeu Then, also stands accused of injuring his 25-year-old brother, who had tried to intervene, said Kralanh district police chief Chan Saren.

According to Mr. Saren, Mr. Then arrived home heavily drunk late on Friday night. When he entered the family home, his mother began criticizing him for his frequent drinking.

Enraged, Mr. Then picked up a wooden stick and began beating her on her head and arms, before turning on his brother, who reported the incident to the police, Mr. Saren said.

“Police arrested Mr. Then at his house in Sambuor commune the same day they received the complaint from his family,” he said.

Mr. Then was sent to the Siem Reap provincial Court on Sunday, said Mr. Saren, and police are seeking intentional murder charges.
