Man Held Over Alleged Rape of Girlfriend

A 26-year-old man has been held for questioning at the Interior Ministry since Tuesday, when he was arrested for allegedly drugging and raping his 19-year-old girlfriend and recording a video of the assault, an official said Thursday.

According to the victim, she and the suspect, Chhorm Yuthanea, had been drinking at a karaoke parlor in Phnom Penh on New Year’s Eve when he slipped a pill into her drink, causing her to lose consciousness, then raped her, said Voan Intrea, deputy director of the Interior Ministry’s anti-human trafficking department.

The victim said Mr. Yuthanea later threatened to post a video of the sexual assault online, Mr. Intrea added.

“The suspect threatened the victim, saying he would post the video on Facebook to shame her if she did not meet with him,” he said. Mr. Intrea said the victim’s mother only learned of the rape recently, and filed a complaint on Tuesday morning. Mr. Yuthanea was arrested that evening, he said.

“We might send the suspect to the municipal court tomorrow morning.”
