Man, Girl Injured in UXO Explosion Caused by Fire

A 32-year-old man was killed and his 12-year-old sister-in-law was seriously injured yesterday morning when they made a fire to warm themselves and caused a UXO to explode in Oddar Meanchey province’s Anlong Veng district, officials said.

“One man died immediately and one girl got seriously injured during an explosion at Choam Mountain near the Cambodian-Thai border,” said commune police chief Hing Thoeng. The victim, Hoeur Peak, and his sister-in-law, Voeun Poes, set up a fire outside their house at about 6:30 am, not knowing that a UXO was buried nearby.

About 10 minutes later, the fire caused the UXO to explode, immediately killing Hoeur Peak and injuring Poes, said Mr. Thoeng. “The girl was injured on her right thigh and was sent to Anlong Veng district hospital,” he said.
