Man Charged Over Rape, Murder of Kratie Girl

The Kratie Provincial Court on Tuesday charged a cassava plantation worker over the rape and murder of the 12-year-old daughter of a commune police chief last week, a court official said.

Deputy prosecutor Hak Hon said that Ka Sovan, 23, confessed to raping and killing the girl in Sambor district’s O’Krieng commune.

“This morning I charged the suspect with rape and murder and decided that he must be imprisoned for the rest of his life based on the Article 205 of the criminal code,” Mr. Hon said, adding that the suspect had been placed in provisional detention.

Article 205 of the criminal code covers murders preceded by torture, cruel acts or rape.

Mr. Sovan, who worked with the victim’s brother, helped in the search for his victim, Khun Maly, who went missing on Friday and was found dead in a pond 3 km from her home on Saturday.

The victim’s father, O’Krieng commune police chief Chey Samon, agreed with the court’s decision.

“We are still in deep sorrow…but I think the court’s decision is reasonable,” he said.
