Man Charged Over Attacking British Tourist With Ax

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court charged a man Sunday with intentional violence after he confessed to using an ax to hack a British tourist in the head last week at a park in Daun Penh district, officials said Monday.

Sours Sopheak, a district police officer in charge of judicial affairs, said Doeb Ngol, 21, confessed to a prosecutor at the court that he used the ax to hit Phillip Shimmin, 26, in the head twice.

“The court charged the suspect with intentional violence with aggravating circumstances,” Mr. Sopheak said, adding that Mr. Ngol was sent to Prey Sar prison Sunday.

Deputy district police chief Khun Nguon had previously said that Mr. Ngol attacked Mr. Shimmin Wednesday night and also misidentified the victim as Irish.

Contacted by telephone, Mr. Shimmin, who has been volunteering at an NGO in Siem Reap since early July, said the attack actually happened Tuesday night.

“He just hit me and then walked off casually; it was just random,” Mr. Shimmin said, adding that he received 20 stitches at Calmette Hospital.
