Man Catches Dog, Will Eat It, Too

Phnom Penh pet owners beware: A self-confessed dog meat addict was released by police after a dog in his possession that was at first thought to be stolen turned out to be a stray.

Chhit Sovann, 34, a Military Police lieutenant, was arrested with the bagged canine and dog-catching equipment in Boeng Salang Commune early Wednesday, said Hun Song, Tuol Kok district police chief. “We released him because of his commander’s pleas, and because the dog was a stray…so his mistake was only a little bit wrong,” Hun Song explained.

Chhit Sovann confessed to catching the stray because he was “addicted to only dog meat,” the policeman said.

Hun Song added that Chhit Sovann was also found carrying an unlicensed pistol. With a voucher from his commanding officer the soldier was allowed to keep his gun—but police confiscated the dog.
