Man Arrested Over Rape of 11-Year-Old in Kampot

A 50-year-old rice farmer was arrested on Thursday in Kampot province for the rape of an 11-year-old neighbor with whom he claimed to be “in love,” provincial police said.

The suspect, San Vanthy, lives near a coffee shop run by the victim’s parents in Toek Chhou district’s Prey Thnang commune.

Acting provincial police chief Hem Chhum said that Mr. Vanthy went to his neighbor’s shophouse on Wednesday afternoon when he knew the girl would be alone and raped her there.

“The suspect pretended to buy coffee, then he raped the girl in the house,” he said. “The next day, the parents noticed that the girl seemed scared, and they questioned her until they found out what the suspect did.

Then they submitted a complaint to district police seeking his arrest.”

Mr. Vanthy was quickly brought in for questioning at the district police station, where he admitted to committing the rape but said it was because he had been “in love with the victim for the past two months,” Mr. Chhum said.

Police plan to send him to the provincial court on Saturday morning to face charges of raping a minor, he added.
