Man Arrested Over Gang Rape of Disabled Woman

A 24-year-old man was jailed on Friday on suspicion of taking part in the gang rape of a disabled woman three years ago, police in Kandal province said.

Brey Thong was arrested on Thursday for his alleged role in gang-raping a wheelchair-bound 25-year-old woman with polio, district police chief Seng Socheat said.

In October 2012, Sok Saroeun, a neighbor of the victim, visited the woman at home and took her to a deserted high school in Sa’ang district’s Troeuy Sla commune.

He and two friends then took turns raping her on a bench before a local resident witnessed the attack and raised the alarm.

Upon arriving at the scene, police only managed to detain Sok Saroeun, while the two other attackers fled on foot.

Mr. Saroeun was later charged and found guilty of aggravated rape, while police failed to locate the other two until this week.

Mr. Socheat, the district police chief, said Mr. Thong had fled the district and only returned home recently.

Deputy provincial police chief Roeun Nara said Mr. Thong had been jailed on Friday on the basis of a 2012 warrant, and that police were now searching for the third suspect. (Khuon Narim)
