Man Arrested for Sneaking Meth Into Courthouse

A 35-year-old man was arrested at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday morning after he attempted to sneak a small bag of powdered methamphetamine to a friend appearing in court, police said.

Un Chanthy, who works as a sculptor, wrapped the bag in a 500-riel note before tossing it through the bars of a holding cell in the courthouse, said Sok Setha, a Prampi Makara district police officer.

“He threw it to his friend,” he said. “Then police saw the action and arrested him.”

Mr. Setha said Mr. Chanthy had prearranged the delivery with his confined friend, who he said he could not identify, adding that the sculptor is currently being held at the district police station to await his own court appearance.

Meas Vyrith, secretary-general of the National Authority on Combating Drugs, said that to his knowledge, no one had ever been arrested in Phnom Penh for attempting to smuggle drugs to a prisoner at court.

“It has never happened before,” he said.
