A 25-year-old man was arrested in Kampot province on Wednesday for the murder of his longtime girlfriend at their house in Takeo province, an official said Thursday.
Iem Chandara fled his home in Takeo’s Tram Kak district after allegedly slitting the throat of Chim Phally, 24, after an argument over how long it was taking her to prepare a beef salad, witnesses told police.
Deputy district police chief Sok Sochea said Thursday that Mr. Chandara was arrested on Wednesday night after being found sleeping under his uncle’s house in nearby Angkor Chey district in Kampot.
“We investigated by contacting the suspect’s relatives by telephone, and we got reports that the suspect was staying at his uncle’s house in Angkor Chey district,” he said.
Mr. Chandara confessed to police, but told them that his anger had been precipitated by the belief that his girlfriend was cheating on him, Mr. Sochea said.
“When we questioned him today, he told us that he killed Chim Phally because she was having an affair with another man,” he said.
“She denied this when they argued and that is the reason he killed the victim.”
The suspect is set to be sent to the Takeo Provincial Court today to face charges of murder, according to Sem Socheat, chief of the provincial police’s serious crimes bureau.
