Man Allegedly Rapes Then Murders Woman in Kandal

Police in Kandal province arrested a man on Nov 29 for allegedly raping a woman and then killing her after she proposed the pair get married.

Police said Vath Thon, 39, confessed to the crime of sexually assaulting the woman and then strangling her to death when she demanded he marry her following the assault.

Passersby found the naked body of Sin Sekha, 35, lying in a wooded area the same day of Mr Thon’s arrest in Ang Snuol district’s Tuol Pich commune. District penal police chief Phach Vanna said Ms Sekha, who reportedly suffered from a mental disability, went missing on Nov 25.

Mr Vanna said Mr Thon refused the request for matrimony by his victim because he was already married and a father of one. In addition, he believed that marrying Ms Sekha would be dishonorable due to her mental capabilities.

“The victim was mentally disabled so if the suspect married that woman, it will be shameful,” Mr Vanna said. “So the suspect strangled her to death.”

In Kompong Speu province, five men stand accused of attempted rape and robbery after they briefly abducted a woman along National Road 4.

Penal police chief Svay Yeoun said the group—Sam Sokha, 27; Nhem Vorn, 23; Bun Thorn, 22; Sang Sophan, 21 and Meas Keo, 18—were driving along the road in Phnom Sruoch district after drinking palm wine and offered a ride to a 30-year-old woman.

The men said they would take the woman to the local market but turned off the road and accelerated the vehicle.

After driving a brief distance, the men began grabbing at the woman who leapt from the car window and sustained minor injuries, Mr Yeoun said. The men are expected to appear in court today.

In Phnom Penh, a 16-year-old boy allegedly raped a 3-year-old girl in Meanchey district’s Niroth commune, said commune police chief Hun Chan Thoeun. The boy was arrested Tuesday and allegedly committed the crime on the same day at the victim’s home.
