Man Allegedly Kills Ex-Fiancee, Attempts Suicide

Police are waiting for a man to regain consciousness, after a suicide attempt, to arrest him for the rape and murder of his former fiancee in Kandal province on Sunday, police and commune officials said Monday.

Phoeun Ny, 23, had swallowed rat poison and was found unconscious in his home by police who had been alerted by the victim’s family that her body had been found on a mango plantation at 2 p.m., said Ponhea Leu district deputy police chief Seng Srang.

Police took Mr. Ny to Phnom Penh’s Calmette Hospital, where they are waiting for him to recover.

“After he raped and killed his fiancee, the suspect tried to commit suicide, but was rescued and brought to the hospital,” Mr. Srang said, adding that when he regains consciousness he will be arrested.

Mr. Ny allegedly murdered Han Srey Neang, 18, at about 9 a.m. on Sunday after driving her on his motorcycle to the plantation about 400 meters from Chhvang commune’s Prey Kol village, according to commune chief Y Kavin.

Mr. Kavin said Han Srey Neang and Mr. Ny were in love and got engaged in 2013. However, much to Mr. Ny’s chagrin, their future plans were broken off due to the victim’s parents’ disapproval of the suspect, whom they thought was irresponsible and partied too much.

“The suspect said that he still loved his fiancee despite her parents cutting off the engagement,” he said, adding that the suspect had vowed to make her his wife one day.

Commune police chief Khun Khin said tests had confirmed that the victim was raped before she was killed.

“The suspect raped her before killing her, and left both his and her underwear near the scene [of the crime],” he said.

“The victim had markings on her neck that indicate she was strangled,” Mr. Khin added.
