A lawmaker lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Labor on Wednesday on behalf of a couple who have not seen or heard from their daughter since she went to work as a maid in Malaysia in August 2010.
The complaint, signed by CNRP lawmaker Men Sothavrin and National Assembly President Heng Samrin, asks the ministry to take action against VC Manpower, the recruitment agency that sent 16-year-old Kem Chanty to work overseas.
“I plead to His Excellency [Labor Minister Ith Sam Heng] to take measures against VC Manpower to find their worker, Kem Chanty, so she can meet her family,” says the complaint, filed on behalf of Kdann Kem and Run Lum.
Contacted Wednesday, Ministry of Labor secretary of state Othsman Hassan said he was unaware of the complaint.
In 2011, Prime Minister Hun Sen put a moratorium on sending maids to Malaysia after a spate of abuses by employers and recruitment agencies.
A new memorandum of understanding to resume the practice has been in the works for more than a year and is currently being reviewed by the Council of Ministers.
