Last Two Suspects in Container Heist Attempt Released

Kompong Speu provincial military police on Monday released the two remaining suspects, of eight originally arrested, who together were accused of attempting to break into a container truck to steal its shipment of undergarments.

The eight men were arrested on Friday near the truck, which was destined for the Phnom Penh Autonomous Port but wound up parked in an empty lot in Kompong Speu province.

Six of the group were released hours later, but two were detained for further questioning. Military police said on Sunday that the two were caught attempting to cut the locks off the container.

However, Tith Vannak, director of the provincial military police’s penal office, said Monday that upon further questioning, police determined that the two remaining suspects were in fact witnesses.

“Last time [when first questioned], they said something unclear, but after being questioned again this morning, they were not involved in stealing and they became witnesses instead,” Mr. Vannak said.

“The perpetrators are the driver and three other people. We know their identities, but we cannot tell because we are afraid they will run away.”
