Laotian Meth Smuggler Arrested in Stung Treng

A Laotian man was arrested in Stung Treng province on Tuesday after crossing into Cambodia with nearly a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine, a police official said Wednesday.

Chem Phanith, chief of the provincial anti-drug police, said his officers had been closely following a smuggling operation with the help of an informant, and ambushed Sak Vongsai, 37, in Thala Barivat district after he crossed the riparian border between Laos and Cambodia.

“We spent more than two months investigating—and sent our informant to incite them [to smuggle the drugs]—before we could arrest the Laotian man,” Mr. Phanith said. “Yet we only arrested the one man with 898.2 grams of ‘ice’ at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, and some of his other partners ran back onto Laotian soil.”

According to Mr. Phanith, Mr. Vongsai was charged with drug smuggling at the Stung Treng Provincial Court on Wednesday, then sent to the provincial prison to await trial.

The investigating judge, Ing Kimthol, could not be reached.
