Kompong Chhnang Man, 68, Charged With Rape of Girl, 8

The Kompong Chhnang Provincial Court on Thursday charged a 68-year-old man with rape of a minor after the parents of an 8-year-old girl accused him of repeatedly raping their daughter in July, a police official said.

Uot Phoeun, a farmer from Boribor district’s Ponlai commune, allegedly preyed upon the girl after her parents left home to work in Stung Treng province, leaving the child with a grandmother who lived next door to Mr. Phoeun.

When her parents returned home last week, they noticed that the girl appeared unwell and had injuries on her genitals. She then told them about being attacked by Mr. Phoeun, who was arrested on Tuesday.

“The provincial court decided to charge him with raping a minor,” said deputy provincial police chief Pol Vuthy, adding that Mr. Phoeun had been sent to the provincial prison to await trial.

“He confessed to committing the crime,” Mr. Vuthy said.

“The parents sent the girl to live with her grandmother, providing a good opportunity for the suspect to rape her.”
