Khmer Rouge Tribunal Appoints New Trial Chamber Judge

King Norodom Sihamoni on Monday formally appointed Austrian Judge Claudia Fenz to the Khmer Rouge tribunal’s five-person Trial Chamber.

Judge Fenz had been a reserve judge for the panel since 2006, but was nominated for the position after Judge Silvia Cartwright, who handed in her resignation in June, officially stepped down Monday.

“Following the nomination by the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and the approval by the Supreme Council of the Magistracy, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni has appointed Ms. Claudia Fenz…as a new international judge to serve in the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia,” the court said in a statement.

Judge Fenz’s new role will see her adjudicating Case 002/02 against former Khmer Rouge leaders Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, who were last month found guilty of crimes against humanity during the first phase of their trial.
