Kandal Man Hacks Wife To Death, Commits Suicide

A 41-year-old man hacked his wife to death Wednesday in Kandal province after she refused to give him 10,000 riel (about $2.50) for gambling and drinking, before killing himself, police said Thursday.

Much Chan Pech, Koh Thom district deputy police chief, said that 40-year-old Huy Srieng, from the district’s Sampov Puon commune, gave her husband, Chhun Horn, 10,000 riel on Wednesday afternoon, only for him to gamble away the money and return at about 5 p.m. to ask for more cash.

“The couple started arguing and police called them into Sampov Puon commune police office to make them stop,” Mr. Chan Pech said. According to Long Penh, commune deputy police chief, the couple was allowed to return home after police apparently resolved the argument, but the husband quickly turned violent.

“When they arrived home, the husband used a machete to hack his wife to death,” Mr. Penh said, adding that Chhun Horn then set her body on fire before fleeing.

Police searched for the suspect until 12 a.m. Thursday, Mr. Penh said, but it wasn’t until 6 a.m. that locals found him hanging from a tree about 2 km from his home in an apparent suicide.
