Judges Transferred From Provinces to Capital

King Norodom Sihamoni has signed off on the transfer of three judges and a prosecutor from their provincial posts to work in Phnom Penh, Justice Minister Ang Vong Vathana said Tuesday.

According to Oct 2 royal decrees published in the latest Royal Gazette, Siem Reap Provincial Court Deputy Director Nop Sophon, Sihanoukville Municipal Judge Kim Sophorn and Kompong Speu Provincial Judge Khieu Sokha were moved to posts inside the Justice Ministry. Ang Vong Vathana said the men had personally requested the transfers.

Additional decrees signed Oct 2 confirmed the retirement of 60-year-old Kompong Speu Provincial Court Director Pen Sarith and extended the employment of three other judges and a prosecutor despite the fact that they also turned 60 years old, which is the mandatory retirement age for civil servants.

Ang Vong Vathana said the tenures of the officials—Kandal Provincial Court Director Khiev Sameth, Kompong Chhnang Provincial Court Deputy Director Ly Kuy, Kompong Cham Provincial Judge Sim Kuch and Prey Veng Provincial Chief Prosecutor Yam Yet—were extended due to a lack of available replacements.

“There is a shortage of people to do the work,” Ang Vong Vathana said. “They requested to continue their work,” he added.

Pen Sarith said he also requested to continue working but was rejected for unknown reasons.

“I don’t know what to do, so I just stay home,” he said Tuesday.
