Japanese Dancers Bringing Moves to Phnom Penh

Japanese dancers will take over Chaktomuk Theater in Phnom Penh tonight, showcasing a range of styles from fluid jazz to street-styled break dancing as part of the tour “DANCE DANCE ASIA-Crossing the Movement.”

Dance groups Hilty & Bosch, Memorable Moment and Area Rock Styler will stage 20- to 30-minute performances.

The duo Hilty & Bosch, which has performed in over 30 countries around the world, will deliver an act featuring “locking”—a hip-hop technique that freezes fast movements into stylized positions.

Memorable Moment, a larger group with a very different style, is comprised of expressionist jazz dancers.

Lastly, Area Rock Styler will perform a hybrid of hip-hop, pop and break dancing.

One of the group’s members, 24-year-old Taichi Shibuya, said he has been dancing for 15 years, but that tonight’s show would be his first performance overseas.

“Tonight we want to show that a lot of people around the world can communicate through dance,” he said. Performances begin at 7 p.m.
