Italian Among 5 Arrested Over Gambling Website

An Italian man was among five people arrested in Sihanoukville on Tuesday afternoon for running an illegal gambling website, officials said Wednesday.

“We arrested [the Italian man] and four Cambodians,” said General Sok Phal, director of the Ministry of Interior’s immigration department, adding that he could not remember the Italian’s name.

“We arrested him because he was running an illegal online gambling operation, and we have already sent him to Phnom Penh,” he said, referring further questions to his deputy, Khun Sambo.

Lieutenant General Sambo said he had participated in the operation to arrest the five individuals in the coastal town’s Bei commune, but declined to comment further.

Keo Ratana, deputy chief of police in Preah Sihanouk province, said the operation was not part of an ongoing nationwide census that has seen more than 500 foreigners deported since late July.

“This was about illegal online gambling; it was not related to the census of foreigners,” he said.
