A Cambodian immigration police officer who was arrested in Thailand more than a week ago was still being held and questioned on Sunday by Thai authorities for his alleged involvement in weapons trafficking, an official said.
Sovan Bunthoeun, director of the Cham Yeam International Checkpoint in Koh Kong province, said Thai authorities were continuing to investigate Lean Pisith, who was arrested on June 3 in Thailand’s Trat province near a Thai military officer’s crashed pickup truck in which authorities found dozens of guns and grenades, and thousands of rounds of ammunition, The Bangkok Post reported.
“Thai authorities are still investigating him and we are waiting for their written report,” Mr. Bunthoeun said. Thai officials told him the weapons may have been transported by sea into Thailand, he said.
The Bangkok Post reported on June 3 that a Cambodian man—later identified as Mr. Piseth—was apprehended as he approached the crash site on a Cambodia-registered vehicle after passing through nearby border checkpoints.
Council of Ministers spokesman Phay Siphan said on Thursday that the Defense Ministry was investigating the case. Defense Minister Tea Banh and ministry spokesman Chhum Socheat could not be reached on Sunday.
