American Hurley Scroggins, who died in the US on 4 October after a long illness, was a fixture on the regional media scene for the best part of three decades. He worked with the Manager group in Bangkok in the early 1990s, and then pursued a precarious career as a journeyman journalist in Phnom Penh, starting in 1992 in the UNTAC era. He went on to work as a fixer on various film projects, and for some ten years ran Cantina, a celebrated bar located not far from another riverside restaurant and bar, the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Cambodia.
