Hun Sen Says Coalition Gov’t in Good Shape

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday denied there is any rift in the coalition government after a raid this month on the house of senior Funcinpec official Nhiek Bun Chhay.

“There is no differences between [myself and Prince Norodom Ranariddh],” Hun Sen told reporters following a graduation ceremony at the Faculty of Pedagogy. “What happened has been a big misunderstanding. I completely deny the reports that there has been a collision between the two major parties or myself and the prince. No such thing has occurred.”

Other government leaders, including the prince, also have denied any tensions between the two parties.

Nhiek Bun Chhay, a senator and former resistance fighter who fled Phnom Penh during the factional fighting in 1997, complained to top government officials that 10 armed men broke into his house and beat his wife on the pretext of looking for weapons in mid-September.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith has said the government is investigating the charge.
