Hun Sen Gets More Plaudits for Election Victory

Burma and South Korea have become the latest countries to write to Prime Minister Hun Sen to congratulate him on winning the July 28 national election.

The National Election Committee last week released the final election results, which gave Mr. Hun Sen’s ruling CPP 68 seats in the National Assembly, compared to the opposition CNRP’s 55.

In a letter dated August 28 and posted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website Wednesday, Khin Aung Myint, speaker of Burma’s Upper House of Parliament, commends Mr. Hun Sen for “struggle to create peace, stability and democracy for your country.”

In a second letter, dated Tuesday, South Korean President Park Geun-hye praises Mr. Hun Sen for “receiving the renewed trust of the Cambodian people.”

“I firmly believe that, under your outstanding leadership, the Kingdom of Cambodia will continue to achieve political stability and economic development, I have no doubt, in particular, that Your Excellency’s wisdom and efforts will lead Cambodia to a new era,” the letter reads.

Ms. Park is the first leader of a democratic country outside of Asean to send a letter of congratulations to Mr. Hun Sen. Bilateral trade between Cambodia and South Korea reached $970 million last year, up from about $540 million in 2011.
