Hun Sen Off To Singapore

Prime Minister Hun Sen departed on Thursday for a three-day official visit to Singapore to lure investors to Cambodia.

The Cambodian premier will meet his counterpart, Singaporean Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, as well as a group of several hundred business leaders.

“Hun Sen will report about Cambodia’s current situation and ask them to do business here,” said Cambodian Minister of Foreign Affairs Hor Namhong, who was part of Hun Sen’s delegation.

Hun Sen, who is traveling with his wife, Bun Rany, and other senior Cambodian officials, is due to address business leaders at a dinner hosted by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry today. The delegation will also visit the Port of Singapore, public housing, and Singapore’s resort island of Sentosa, according to a statement by Singapore’s Foreign Ministry.

Hun Sen is due to leave Saturday. Late next week, Hun Sen also will lead a delegation to Japan for the funeral of former Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi, who died last month after suffering a stroke.

Government spokesman Khieu Kanharith said Thursday the makeup of the delegation to Japan for Obuchi’s funeral has not been completely decided, but will include senior government officials. The delegation is expected to depart for Japan sometime around June 10.

In the past Hun Sen described Obuchi as a great leader who helped Cambodia significantly with millions of dollars in aid to stabilize the country’s economy after decades of civil conflict.

Obuchi visited Cambodia in January, marking the first time a Japanese head of state came to the country in 40 years.
