Organised crime gangs are luring workers with fraudulent job offers and forcing them to take part in multibillion-dollar cyber scams to swindle Australians and people in other wealthy countries.
The gangs target tech-savvy English and Mandarin speakers in South-East Asia and force them to run cyber scams from abandoned casinos with armed security and razor wire, according to the International Justice Mission, a non-government organisation focused on human trafficking.
“We have heard from witness testimonies that Australians are being targeted with these scams,” Jake Sims who leads IJM in Cambodia and said they are run like professional call centres. “The operations are quite sophisticated. They look like sales floors.”
