Hit and Run Kills 10-Year-Old Boy in Stung Treng

Military police pursued and apprehended a man in Stung Treng province on Wednesday after he killed a 10-year-old boy in a hit-and-run accident, police said.

Chan Chang Ching, 30, a vendor from Banteay Meanchey province, was on the way to visit relatives when he allegedly hit the boy on National Road 9 in Thala Barivat district.

Provincial police chief Kong Ratana said a taxi driver witnessed the accident and phoned the local military police office.

Four vehicles were then sent to chase down the driver, Mr. Ratana said.

“The suspect hit the 10-year-old boy, then he tried to run off,” he said. Mr. Ratana added that he had searched Mr. Chang Ching for possession of alcohol or drugs, but did not find any.

Provincial military police deputy commander Sao Sarem said the suspect was likely speeding at the time of the accident.

“We followed him for around 20 km and then arrested him,” Mr. Sarem said. “The victim died immediately.”

Mr. Chang Ching is due in court Friday.
