‘Hero’ rat receives animals’ George Cross for detecting landmines in Cambodia

Watermelon-loving rodent Magawa awarded the PDSA Gold Medal for his life-saving work.

A landmine detection rat, whose work in Cambodia has transformed the lives of many residents in a country still picking up the pieces after decades of internal conflict, has collected the highest award in the British animal kingdom for his life-saving bravery.

Magawa (that’s his name) is not just any old rodent. He’s a HeroRAT (that’s his occupation).

Magawa is a landmine detection rat, which means he’s an expert at detecting explosives. His brave work has transformed the lives of countless Cambodians.
