Grocery Store Owner Shot During Robbery in Kompong Speu

A husband and wife running a grocery store from their home in Kompong Speu province’s Phnom Sruoch district were robbed at gunpoint on Sunday night in an attack that left the husband seriously injured, police said Monday.

Maha Saing commune police chief Sou Sothon said that five men, including one armed with an AK-47 assault rifle, attacked the couple at their home at about 6:40 p.m.

“The victim was hit by one bullet on the back, below the right arm, and got seriously injured,” he said, adding that the victim, Len Bunly, 35, was recovering at Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh.

“The victim tried crying for help, but nobody dared to help because they heard gunfire,” Mr. Sothon said.

The robbers made off with two mobile phones, some jewelry and about $250, the police chief added. Neighbors called police when they heard the gunshots, and officers arrived only to be shot at as well, Mr. Sothon said.

“The gunman fired a warning shot at our police and then they all escaped,” he said. “Now, our police are investigating to find the perpetrators.”
