Grenade explosions in three provinces killed nine and injured 41 during Khmer New Year celebrations, officials said Thursday.
Four children died and one was injured in Chamkar Leu district, Kompong Cham province, when the grenade they were playing with exploded, said Va Sarith, provincial military police chief.
In Kompong Thom province, a grenade carried inside a taxi exploded as the car sped over the bumpy road, killing the driver and injuring eight, according to provincial military police chief Di Phan.
Police are investigating two separate grenade attacks in Kampot province that left four dead and 31 injured inside gambling dens. City investigators are also looking into the explosion that injured one man last Friday outside the Vietnamese Embassy, Interior Ministry official Mao Chandara said Thursday.
It’s unclear if that explosion can be connected to recent tension between Vietnam and the Cambodian government, allowed the first 18 ethnic Vietnamese minorities to be resettled in the US.
