Two government ministers will meet with a National Assembly commission on Monday to discuss a tourism management plan for Bokor Mountain, according to CNRP lawmaker Yem Ponhearith, who last month visited the mountain to inspect burial sites popular with Vietnamese tourists.
Mr. Ponhearith, who chairs the National Assembly’s commission on religious affairs, culture and tourism, said he hopes to have the area turned into a Cambodian cultural site.
In a Facebook post on Friday, Mr. Ponhearith said Culture Minister Phoeung Sackona and Cults and Religions Minister Min Khin would meet with his commission on Monday.
“It is very important to protect natural areas to show our national identity,” he said in the post.
At the time of his visit, there was no trace of Vietnamese pilgrims, but Svay Vuthy, director of public relations at Sokha Hotel—which manages the entire mountain—said on Friday that they returned after the official mission left.
“[They] continue visiting Bokor Mountain, but they don’t meditate or put up portraits or statues like before,” he said.
