Gold Robbers Shoot Man Dead, Wound His Sister

A man was shot dead and his sister seriously wounded outside their home in Kompong Chhnang province on Tuesday evening by three armed robbers who intercepted the siblings shortly after they closed down their family’s gold-exchange business for the day, police said Wednesday.

Suon Ratha, 31, and his sister Suon Borin, 26, were on their way home at about 4:50 p.m. from the Prey Khmer market in Rolea Ba’ier district with three bags of gold when two men—one armed with a pistol and one with a rifle—opened fire on them, said Yi Thim, police chief of Rolea Ba’ier commune.

“The gunmen shot five rounds, hitting Ratha in the left side of his chest and once in his back. His sister Borin was struck in the waist and seriously injured after running to help her brother,” he said, adding that the suspects escaped on a motorbike driven by the third robber.

Mr. Thim said Suon Ratha died at the scene, while his sister was brought to Calmette Hospital in Phnom Penh, where she remains in serious condition.

“The victim cried for help but no one came to help her because they were scared of the guns,” he said.
