A 4-year-old girl is presumed dead after a storm capsized a fishing boat she and her father were traveling in across the Mekong River in Stung Treng province Thursday morning, a police official said.
With the boat’s owner and another neighbor, Ban Mom and her father had been about halfway across the river in Thala Barivat district when a squall overturned the small wooden vessel, causing it to sink, according to deputy district penal police chief Cheng Rith.
“Based on reports from this morning, the villagers had been traveling by boat across the river to buy groceries and food in Laos,” he said.
“But unfortunately, when they got to the middle of the river, the boat sank.”
Mr. Rith said Ban Mom disappeared underwater as the three men struggled to reach the shore.
“I think the girl died already because…authorities have not found her body,” he said, adding that commune police and local residents were still searching for the girl.
