Resistance General Nhiek Bun Chhay has accused Second Premier Hun Sen of ordering the grenade attack on the premier’s residential compound. The general’s claim came in a Tuesday-morning broadcast on Radio Free Asia.
Nhiek Bun Chhay, holed up with resistance troops in the northern border stronghold of O’Smach, said “reliable sources” informed him the Monday morning attack was a pretext for the government to shut down opposition protests over the election.
Two grenades exploded Monday in Hun Sen’s compound. The premier later warned demonstrators to disperse and said opposition leaders would be arrested.
“This is what Hun Sen has prepared,” Nhiek Bun Chhay said. “He did that in order to call the demonstrations illegal and arrest…Sam Rainsy and [Prince Norodom Ranariddh].”
He also pledged to lead troops into Phnom Penh if Sam Rainsy and the prince are arrested.
