General Charged in Tycoon’s Murder to Face Court

Major General Thong Sarath, the Defense Ministry official charged with masterminding the November murder of Shimmex Group chairman Ung Meng Chue, will be questioned at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court today, his lawyer said Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Lim Vanna mistakenly said that his client would be questioned Wednesday. “The court did not question him today,” Mr. Vanna said Wednesday. “The questioning will be [Thursday] at 2 p.m.”

Maj. Gen. Sarath, who had been in hiding since November, was apprehended by authorities in Vietnam last Thursday, according to police.

He was then handed over to Cambodian authorities, questioned at the municipal court on Friday and sent to Prey Sar prison to await trial.

Maj. Gen. Sarath faces a possible life sentence if found guilty.
