A Defense Ministry official was arrested in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district on Saturday after he hit a motorbike with his car, killing its driver, a police official said Sunday.
District police chief Mak Hong said that Pov Sovann, an official at the Defense Ministry with the rank of major general, had been speeding on Street 2001 in Phnom Penh Thmei commune when he rear-ended a motorbike with his Toyota Highlander at about 3 p.m.
Mr. Hong said the driver of the motorbike died instantly after she was launched from the vehicle and her body hit a parked Nissan pickup truck.
“The car crashed into the motorbike and the woman died when she hit the Nissan,” he said, adding that he did not know the victim’s name.
Mr. Hong said Major General Sovann was arrested at the scene of the accident and sent to the municipal traffic police headquarters, declining to comment further.
Municipal traffic police chief Chev Hak said he knew nothing about the case.
