Garment Workers Protest Firing of Lead Unionists

More than 300 garment workers at the Shui Yat factory in Kompong Speu province’s Chbar Mon City entered a second day of strikes on Monday over the firing of two leaders of the factory’s chapter of the Free Trade Union (FTU).

The industrial action started on Saturday after the factory’s managers fired FTU factory chief Sun Vanna and deputy chief Phat On the evening before, ostensibly for leaving work early without notice, said FTU official Say Chanthou.

“The garment factory asked the workers to wait for a resolution after Water Festival,” Mr. Chanthou said of the three-day celebration, which begins today.

“I think the factory’s administration has no intention of solving this problem,” said Ms. Vanna, one of the fired workers.

“In particular, the factory does not want the workers to have a union at the factory because it will be difficult to control the workers.”

Factory administrator Oum Sothy declined to comment.
