Garment Worker Truck Crash Injures 39

Thirty-eight garment workers were injured Saturday morning when a truck they were riding on collided head on with an oncoming vehicle on National Road 3 in Kandal province, according to police.

The truck, which was carrying 50 to 60 workers from Takeo province to a factory in Kompong Speu province, crashed at about 6:45 a.m. when the driver swerved into the opposite lane and hit a car that was en route to collect pigs in Kandal Stung district, according to district police chief Men Chanrith.

He added that the driver of the car was seriously injured in the crash, which resulted in 38 workers, including three pregnant women, suffering minor injuries. Mr. Chanrith said the cause of the crash was careless driving on both sides.

“This incident happened because of the lack of respect to the speed limit and their carelessness,” he said.

Tbeng commune police chief Puth Sokunthea said the driver of the truck was sent to district police headquarters where he is being detained while the other driver is being treated in the hospital.
