‘Gangster regime’: Outrage at arrest of union leader after Australian visit

Australia has raised concerns with Cambodia about the detention of a prominent union leader after a Labor MP demanded she be released by “Hun Sen’s gangster regime”.

Chhim Sithar, who has represented hundreds of laid-off workers in a high-profile dispute with Cambodia’s largest casino, NagaWorld, was apprehended in Phnom Penh on Saturday after stepping off a plane from Melbourne, where she had attended the International Trade Union Confederation World Congress.

Police in the Cambodian capital said she had been in breach of bail conditions by travelling overseas, having been arrested on incitement charges in January over the year-long NagaWorld strike and later released.
