Funcinpec has asked the National Assembly to replace Funcinpec lawmaker You Hockry after he was found to be secretly channeling funds to the Norodom Ranariddh Party, officials said Sunday.
Funcinpec on Friday asked parliament to install party member So Nath in You Hockry’s seat, said Funcinpec spokesman Nouv Sovathero, adding that You Hockry was found to be providing money to the NRP ahead of the April 1 commune elections.
“You Hockry has supported and funded the Norodom Ranariddh Party,” Nouv Sovathero said, adding that the party fired him from its ranks on May 11.
You Hockry and So Nath could not be reached for comment.
NRP spokesman Muth Channtha said he was unaware of whether You Hockry had been funding the NRP. He added that You Hockry is not a member of the party, although the NRP welcomes anyone who would like to join.
CPP lawmaker and National Assembly Deputy President Nguon Nhel said that You Hockry automatically lost his parliament seat when Funcinpec dismissed him from the party.
Funcinpec is now welcome to appoint a replacement for their lawmaker, he said.
You Hockry’s ouster came as another prominent party lawmaker, Princess Norodom Vacheara, announced that she will quit politics after the 2008 national election.
Princess Vacheara, who returned to Cambodia this month after a year-long absence for medical treatment abroad, said Sunday that she has asked National Assembly and CPP Honorary President Heng Samrin to take two more months off work because she is still sick, and will then hopefully return to the Assembly.
“If I feel better I will come and serve the constituents,” she said.
Nouv Sovathero said Funcinpec would like Princess Vacheara to come back to parliament after her lengthy absence.
“The party wants her to stick around,” he added.
